For over three decades, Elias Husamudeen has worked at the intersection of government, labor, public safety, corrections, and politics. That experience gave him something that textbooks, strategy presentations, or consultants’ playbooks cannot teach: an understanding of how institutions, people, and decisions interact in the real world.

LOOK BEYOND THE OBVIOUS
Every organization has a stated problem. The stated problem, however, is not always the real problem. Before recommending a solution, we believe it is essential to understand what is actually happening beneath the surface.
That means looking beyond assumptions and conventional explanations. It means examining the facts, understanding the people involved, recognizing the institutional interests at play, and identifying the forces that may shape the situation.
We do not assume that the first explanation is the right explanation.
We ask questions. We examine the facts. We challenge assumptions. We consider the problem from more than one perspective. And we distinguish between what an organization believes is happening and what is actually happening. Because a strategy built on an incomplete understanding of the problem can look excellent on paper and still fail in practice.
Sometimes the answer is not found by looking harder at the problem. It is found by looking at the problem differently.

Policies have to be implemented. Decisions have to be communicated. Organizations have to function. People have to carry out the plan. And competing interests do not disappear simply because someone has made a decision.
Problems often arise in the gap between making a decision and carrying it out. Our experience has taught us to pay attention to that distance. We recognize that government, management, labor, employees, public safety professionals, and the communities they serve may each see the same issue from different perspectives. Understanding them can reveal obstacles that are invisible when a problem is viewed from only one perspective. That’s when our experience proves valuable.
We combine facts, viewpoints, and realities around an issue to help our clients understand not only what is happening, but also why it happens and what practical steps they can take.

Consulting must involve more than just giving clients the answers they want. The advice that challenges a belief, uncovers a flaw, or prompts tough questions is sometimes the most valuable.
